"The timing of this book is impeccable. An exceptional primer for future health care leaders and a must read for all those interested in the most talked about topic today."

Kathleen Gallo, RN, PhD, MBA
North Shore-LIJ Health System

This 10th edition of a classic textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students presents the critical issues and core challenges surrounding our health care system. Leading thinkers, educators, and practitioners provide an in-depth and objective appraisal of why and how we organize health care the way we do; the enormous impact of health-related behaviors on the structure, function, and cost of the health care delivery system; and other emerging and recurrent issues in health policy, health care management, and public health.

Key Features:

  • Includes major provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act of 2010
  • Each chapter includes these special features: key concepts; extensive mapping resources; key words; learning objectives; discussion questions; and case studies
  • Covers the newest models of care, such as Accountable Care Organizations and Integrated Delivery Systems
  • Examines new ways of conceptualizing and assessing health care, including comparative effectiveness research
  • Features contributions by leading scholars and key figures within the U.S. health care system, including John Billings, JD; Carolyn M. Clancy, MD; C. Tracy Orleans, PhD; and Michael S. Sparer, PhD, JD
  • Contains new coverage of health reform, developing countries, population health, public health and catastrophic events, and a broadened discussion of the health care workforce

This text is divided into five sections, in order to provide some coherence to this broad terrain. Part I, The Current U.S. Health Care System, addresses major characteristics and issues, including reform, financing, and comparative health care systems. This section now includes multiple new charts and tables providing concrete health care data. Part II, Population Health, focuses on health behavior, including health care models, public health policy and practice, risk factors, facilitating healthy lifestyle practices, and access to care. Part III, Medical Care Delivery, addresses integrated health models, delivering high-quality health care, cost.... and value, and comparative effectiveness. Part IV, Support for Medical Care Delivery, concerns governance and management issues, including accountability, the health workforce, and information technology. Part V, The Future of Health Care Delivery in the United States, includes a new 5-year trend forecast.

Note: An updated instructor's guide and PowerPoint slides are available to all qualified instructors.

Novel Immune Potentiators and Delivery Technologies for Next Generation Vaccines

Development of new-generation vaccines is now more challenging than ever, as identifying, purifying and evaluating vaccine antigens is a complex undertaking. Medical books Novel Immune Potentiators and Delivery Technologies for Next Generation Vaccines. Most importantly, once the relevant antigens have been identified, key focus then shifts to the development of suitable delivery systems and formulations to achieve maximum in vivo potency with minimum potential side effects. These novel formulations—many of which will be nanoparticulates—can deliver the antigens to the desired site, to the relevant antigen presenting cells, and prevent systemic exposure of the immune potentiators. The proposed book will outline all the critical steps that need to be considered for successful development of various types of nanoparticulate delivery systems for vaccine antigens. These contributions from leading experts in the area of vaccine formulation and delivery systems will tie in what is the most current status, including clinical evaluations with these novel vaccine technologies Medical books Novel Immune Potentiators and Delivery Technologies for Next Generation Vaccines. Assessing Bioavailablility of Drug Delivery Systems: Mathematical Modeling

Exploring how to apply in vitro/in vivo correlations for controlled release dosage forms, Bioavailability of Drug Delivery Systems: Mathematical Modeling clearly elucidates this complex phenomena and provides a guide for the respective mathematical modeling. Medical books Assessing Bioavailablility of Drug Delivery Systems. The book introduces mathematical modeling methods for calculating the profiles of plasma levels obtained with controlled release dosage forms and provides examples and case studies to illustrate the techniques employed.

The author has considerable experience in investigating mathematical fundamentals that are related to pharmaco- and toxicokinetics, modified-release drug products, physiologic pharmacokinetics and statistical treatment in clinical situations. The mathematical models he has developed are particularly powerful because they account for such major parameters as the kinetics of drug release controlled by diffusion or by erosion, and the kinetics of absorption into and elimination out of the plasma. They are also able to solve the problem of determining the drug level in plasma as a result of patient non-compliance, incorrect dosage, and incorrect frequency and to determine the best dosage forms necessary for therapy Medical books Assessing Bioavailablility Of Drug Delivery Systems: Mathematical Modeling B. Medical Book Assessing Bioavailablility of Drug Delivery Systems

They are also able to solve the problem of determining the drug level in plasma as a result of patient non-compliance, incorrect dosage, and incorrect frequency and to determine the best dosage forms necessary for therapy.

Using master curves, the book highlights the inter-variability of the patients often expressed by different responses towards a drug. Thus, after evaluating a patient's pharmacokinetic parameters, the dose can be adapted to the patient, with the expectation of decreasing the side effects for each patient. Using dimensionless numbers in repeated doses, either for the time or for the plasma drug concentration, makes the master curves useful for every drug, providing that its pharmacokinetics was linear. These master curves address clear information either to the patients or to the therapists in a didactic and easy way. The patients can see from first look the effects of non-compliance and therapists can see the dramatic effects of inter-variability of patients towards a drug.

Drug discovery and dosage forms have become an increasingly time-consuming and expensive process. The development of a single drug can leave behind more than 10 to 15 years of work. Discussing time and cost-effective methods as alternatives to conventional in vivo methods, the book helps you analyze and integrate in vitro/in vivo correlations and apply them to patient care and drug consultation situations.
